Australian Travel Souvenirs for your Christmas Travel Tree
For many years, we've collected Christmas ornaments as travel souvenirs for our tree - creating a Travel Tree!
We love the way each ornament tells a different story, and every year as we decorate our Christmas tree it brings back the memories of trips we've enjoyed.
Our tradition began in 2002, during a trip to visit friends in Germany. While traveling through Rothenburg ob der Tauber, we visited the enchanting Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Shop. After spending hours in the store, we bought a few beautiful ornaments for our tree, along with a limited-edition timber Pyramid Nativity with candles. On the same trip, because we were travelling with toddler Jord, we also returned home with a Playmobil Christmas Nativity —something less fragile for little hands, but still meaningful.
From that moment on, we began collecting ornaments from every new destination we visited. At times, we’ve improvised with key rings and on one recent trip due to lack of options, turned one of our photos into a ceramic ornament. Each piece became a special reminder of our travels. Every year, as the holiday season approaches, we unpack these ornaments and decorate our tree, reminiscing about the journeys that accompany each decoration. It’s a beautiful way to relive those memories and celebrate the adventures we've shared.
Over time, we noticed that smaller towns and cities often didn’t have unique local decorations that truly represented the area. It didn't feel right to buy a generic Australian ornament for places like Torquay, Ballarat, or Port Lincoln. We longed for something that truly represented each town or region we visited.
That’s why we started Downunder Decorations—creating our own thoughtful, distinctive designs that celebrate regional communities and give people something meaningful to display, collect, and treasure.
We invite you to join us on our journey as we plan craft unique ornaments celebrating Australian towns, cities, and regions, so you can decorate your Christmas Travel Tree with a piece of your own travel memories.
